State and federal laws protect some employees from discrimination. Employers cannot discriminate based on identity. Identity includes race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, and gender. It also includes religion, disability, age, and more. Employers cannot punish people who file a complaint. Some states offer more protection than others. For example, most states ban racial discrimination. There are a few states that also ban discrimination based on politics. More workers could get help if these laws were stronger.
