This report provides a tool to measure the level of sprawl in metropolitan areas across the United States. The tool, called the Sprawl Index, takes into account factors such as density, land use mix, street connectivity, and accessibility to create a composite score. The report includes rankings of 221 metropolitan areas based on their Sprawl Index scores, as well as an analysis of the trends and implications of sprawl. The report highlights the negative impacts of sprawl, such as increased traffic congestion, air pollution, and social isolation, and calls for policies that promote compact, walkable, and transit-oriented communities.
