Bill Should Help with Access to Healthy Food

The San Joaquin Valley in Central California is one of the world’s most prolific agricultural regions, producing more than 250 different crops. The Valley produces more almonds, lettuce and potatoes than any other state.

Yet many of the workers who grow this bounty do not have a local grocery store where they can buy it. Wide stretches of the Valley offer residents limited access to grocery stores and markets with fresh produce. Instead, their communities have convenience stores selling fast food, candy and giant sodas. To buy affordable, healthy foods, residents must travel greater distances – and usually do not.  More…
