Some of their collaborative efforts include:

  • Construction of a solar home/greenhouse with a hydroponic aquaculture system designed by Dr. Tom Hopkins and Dr. John Darnell;
  • Fountain Rock Nature Center, Frederick County Parks and Recreation;
  • Monocacy Basin Stream Monitoring Project, Hood College, Dept. of Biology; and
  • Monocacy Watershed: A Shared Responsibility Conference, with key participants, Gov. Parris Glendening, U.S. Senator Charles Mathias, and MD Secretary of the Environment Jane Nishida.

Monocacy Basin Stream Monitoring Project

In order to introduce area youth to stream ecology and the natural world, we partner with the Monocacy Basin Stream Monitoring Project (MBSMP) within Hood College's Department of Biology. The project trains area middle and high school teachers water quality monitoring techniques. Each semester, approximately 400 students monitor tributaries of the Monocacy River and Catoctin Creek with the support of this project.
