Our history

For Community Commons, Inc. the year 2007 represents 30 years as a not for profit organization. In the late 1970s active members of the Federated Garden Clubs of Frederick County worked to get Community Commons established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Their work instigated model conservation projects and provided a forum for residents on topics ranging from energy conservation and landscaping to urban sprawl and education.

By the mid-1980s, Community Commons had hosted the Frederick County Solar Home Tour, delivered energy assistance to residents via the Energy Van, developed community gardens with area youth, offered nearly twenty workshops and demonstrations on energy efficiency and gardening, and facilitated meetings on the future Carroll Creek Linear Park. They operated a visible urban demonstration center out of a gas station at the corner of Patrick and Bentz Streets, now home to the Carroll Creek flood control project.

Later, the organization participated in the development of the Fountain Rock Nature Center, Monocacy Basin Stream Monitoring Project at Hood College, and the Monocacy Watershed: A Shared Responsibility Conference, with key participants Gov. Parris Glendening, U.S. Senator Charles Mathias, and MD Secretary of the Environment Jane Nishida. Community Commons has an on-going Schoolyard Habitat Program through the NOAA, and is a member of the Health Care Coalition of Frederick County.
