Social Security benefits come out of people's paychecks as they work. When they retire, this amount is given to them as income. Yet many people cannot meet their basic needs for life, health, and safety on Social Security benefits alone. People who worked in low-wage jobs especially have a hard time meeting living on Social Security alone. Social Security is especially important for women and people of color. These groups often have fewer resources for retirement beyond Social Security. Some people do not get any Social Security benefits at all. This may be because they did not work at all, or did not work in a job that provided them.
