Best Practices in State-Tribal Consultations: Findings from Washington

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) conducted a series of descriptive case studies examining how certain states engage in consultation with tribes and obtain the advice and input from programs operated by the Indian Health Service, tribes or tribal organizations. Analysis of data from these discussions revealed a consultation process based on a collaborative partnership and mutual respect between tribes and the state.
