Engaging People with Lived Experience Toolkit

This toolkit was developed by the People with Lived Experience Workgroup and Community Champions from 100 Million Healthier Lives, and is brought to you in partnership with 100 Million Healthier Lives and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

About this Toolkit

According to SCALE communities, partnership and collaboration with people with lived experience of a core issue and/or inequity (PWLE) was one of the most effective strategies to create lasting community transformation. Bringing PWLE into the work at all levels—in particular at the leadership level—brings wonderful depth, growth and discoveries. This toolkit was built by SCALE communities, faculty, coaches, and the 100MLives evaluation and implementation teams.

Any group that integrates people from different backgrounds, perspectives and experience needs to be able to value, integrate and support every single member. While this toolkit is focused on those who may need the most support, you may notice that many of the strategies, tips and resources contained here are those that help create a high-functioning team (understanding the team’s shared purpose, setting shared goals, listen and value each other's contributions, different perspectives, opinions and priorities, mutual support and taking shared action). There is also notable overlap with the work needed to engage communities.

While this is by no means a linear process, this toolkit is organized into 6 sections:

  1. Getting Started
  2. Connect
  3. Recruit
  4. Engage
  5. Co-Design
  6. Grow

About SCALE and 100 Million Healthier Lives

100 Million Healthier Lives (100MLives), convened by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, was an unprecedented collaboration of change agents across sectors working to transform the way we think and act to create health, well-being, and equity. As part of 100MLives, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) generously funded an initiative called Spreading Community Accelerators through Learning and Evaluation (SCALE), which began in January 2015 and ended its second iteration in April 2019. The goal of SCALE was to work with communities and organizations to accelerate their journeys toward community transformation and population health, or what RWJF refers to as a Culture of Health.
